Move over Barbie Land, Greta Gerwig is set to tackle another wildly popular world, Narnia. According The New YorkerGerwig ‘has a deal with Netflix to write and direct at least two films based on CS Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia.” While Netflix itself has yet to comment on this development, the confirmation appears to come straight from Gerwig herself.
At the moment, there is no more information about this new Greta Gerwig Chronicles of Narnia film adaptations. We don’t know which parts of the series will be adapted or even in what form we’ll see them brought to life. The Chronicles of Narnia received a big screen adaptation in the 2000s, with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspianand The Voyage of the Dawn Treader everyone gets live action movies. However, the series did not go as well as hoped. (Though the films were released by Ben Barnes, for which we appreciate them.)
The idea of a Chronicles of Narnia Gerwig’s film is fascinating. CS Lewis’s books are dense and intensely philosophical and religious. While the latter Narnia The films leaned more towards broader fantasy themes, with Gerwig at the helm Narnia The series could become deeper and more existential. But for now, we’ll just have to imagine the possibilities and hope the movies actually happen. Long live Aslan, we hope he is more than a Ken.
