The Guardians of the Galaxy return next week when they appear Thor: Love and Thunderand then the lovable space crew is set to have yet another movie of its own. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 wrapped filming last month, and director James Gunn previously confirmed that this will be the last film to feature the original Guardians crew. While some of the Guardians could appear again in other MCU projects, it’s likely that this is the last time Dave Bautista will play Drax. Last year, Bautista admitted he was in a “weird place” playing Drax, and Gunn recently took to Twitter to confirm it Vol. 3 it will likely be the character’s last outing.

“I try to never say never when it comes to these things, but, yeah, it’s probably the last Drax movie and the end of the story for this Guardians team,” Gunn replied when a fan asked if this would be the last movie by Drax. You can see the tweet below:

During an interview last year, Bautista shared that playing Drax changed his life, but admitted that he thinks Marvel “dropped the ball” on Drax’s story.

“This role changed the trajectory of my life,” Bautista said he said Accelerator. “It’s always going to be special to me. Now that I’m in four movies … I really wish they had invested more in Drax, personally. Because I think Drax has more of a story to tell. I think Drax has a really interesting backstory that they dropped the ball. That’s not a Marvel thing. They had fun, I know what they’re focused on, that’s what they’ve planned. But man, I think they really dropped the ball on Drax. He’s got such a great story. Selfishly, as a performer , that would give me a chance to show different sides of Drax, emotionally. And physically as well. Because if you notice, Drax, even though he looks like a villain, you look at him and he looks scary, but Drax kicks ass more than anyone another Marvel character… The whole “Destroyer” thing they just threw out the window… people just fell so much in love with the comic side of Drax they hit it, then hit it some more , then they really poked a hole in it. he put a huge boat into this character and I don’t think he’ll ever come back. But I’m really looking forward to completing this whole journey.”

In addition to Bautista, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will feature the return of Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Sean Gunn (Kraglin/on the Rocket set), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), and Vin Diesel (Groot). New additions to the cast include Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Chukwudi Iwuji in an undisclosed role, and Daniela Melchior in another mystery part.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled for release on May 5, 2023.
