Netflix leans into scares with new thriller Run Rabbit Run. Starring Succession’s Sarah Snook, the film has already drawn comparisons to other horror heavy hitters like Hereditary and The Babadook, despite its very mixed reviews.
The film stars Snook as a fertility doctor named Sarah, who notices some strange behavior from her daughter Mia (Lily LaTorre). The young woman becomes convinced that she has memories from another life, leading Sarah to confront everything she knows about life and death.
Given the subject matter, it’s not hard to see where these comparisons to other maternal horrors come from. “Snook, of course, is typically excellent, fresh off her turn as Succession’s swashbuckler, reprimanding Shiv Roy in another sharp role here,” writes Critical guardian“but even her performance, as she spirals into a maddened delirium, is reminiscent of Toni Collette in Hereditary.”
In the meantime, Collider review suggests, “The whole experience is eerily reminiscent of earlier Australian horror films like The Babadook and the more recent Relic in the way it tries to combine fossilized elements with something more personal.”
Total Film gave the film three stars writing that it is a “tense mother-daughter thriller”. “Together, Snook and LaTorre create an admirable force, often creating an electric chemistry,” writes our reviewer James Mottram.
Other reviews of the film have been much more mixed, currently sitting at 35% in the critics and audience rating Rotten tomatoes.
Despite a lukewarm critical response, the new thriller is climbing the streaming charts despite only recently landing on Netflix. It is currently in eighth place on the global charts, behind other Netflix originals such as Extraction 2 and The Perfect Find.
