Next on the docket for the upcoming Marvel movies, we get a lot of updates Deadpool & Wolverine until late. After a poster made a disgusting reference, we now have a new clip that will bring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine face to face with one of his biggest rivals. Buy your tickets now, Sabretooth is here and his arrival came with an awesome reference to the Michael Jordan documentary, The last Dance.
In any other franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be strange to refer to a documentary that is available to watch with a Netflix subscription. However, this is absolutely on-brand for Deadpool, and while it may be subtle, I think the nod is intentional. Watch it last clip below and see for yourself:
If you’re not familiar with Michael Jordan or the Chicago Bulls of the 90s, this will do just fine. Don’t worry, we’ll take a look at the alleged reference below and what it might mean for Sabretooth and Wolverine in the upcoming film.
Wolverine And Sabretooth’s Fight features The Alan Parson’s Project
The arrival of Sabretooth Deadpool & Wolverine, at least in this clip, is paired with the song “Sirius” by The Alan Parsons Project. This was basically their soundtrack when the Bulls were in their dynasty in the 90s. The song played as the team was introduced to its home ground and the sports world immediately evokes a memory of its dominance in the NBA.
For this reason, this song was used a lot in documentaries The last Dance. I don’t think this is a coincidence Deadpool & Wolverine decided to use it for now, and it hints at something that could have major implications in this battle we’re only seeing the beginning of.
This is like a direct nod to the last dance and could tell us about the movie
The last Dance centers around the final season of the Chicago Bulls dynasty and the finale of one of the greatest basketball teams of all time. I can’t help but feel that the “Sirius” being played upon Sabretooth’s arrival is an acknowledgment that this will be the last time we see him facing off against Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and we have evidence to back it up. News of Sabretooth’s appearance in the film leaked last year, and without going into details, it sounds like this will be their final battle.
Regardless of how it plays out, it’s great to see Sabretooth again, considering how we were robbed of a potential appearance by the character in Logan. It’s one of the X-Men’s most iconic rivalries, and with all the trailers for this movie showing plenty of bloody battles, it would be nice to see these two claw it out once again. Considering we don’t know how often Hugh Jackman might be a part of the MCU in the future, who better to bring back for what could be “the last dance” for the beloved iteration of the character?
Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters July 26. Get hype for this big adventure and the potentially devastating consequences it will have on the MCU at large. I was already planning to see it, but the return of Sabretooth made me even more excited to buy those tickets.
