Following the announcement this morning that this year’s Oscars will feature a movie chosen by fans on Twitter as “Favorite for Fans”, the public began to share their love for notable movies of 2021. While a series of blockbusters quickly gained attention through the campaign, Jacques Snyder fans started voting Zack Snyder’s Justice League, hoping to spark enough support and attention for the film to win the award. Unfortunately for these fans, there were certain conditions that a film must meet, with the official Oscar website confirming it Zack Snyder’s Justice League was not an eligible film.
Despite the implication that the “favorite movie of 2021” may seem like a fairly simple idea, the official website of the Oscars clarifies things a bit.
“A participant’s favorite film can be any of the 94th Academy Awards – all films are shown on the Oscars website”, the set rules. “Home movies or movies that are / were not suitable CANNOT be used as a Favorite Movie.”
The Academy was also shared this list of all films eligible for the award, in which Zack Snyder’s Justice League does not appear. Although the adventure will not be highlighted at the Oscars, this did not stop fans from showing their support by choosing it as a entry for the category, along with other hashtags related to Zack Snyder.
While there are many moviegoers who are actively involved in the social media campaign, it is quite possible that the Academy has put this provision in place earlier to prevent any annoying results. Not to mention that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is not really a favorite movie experience for many viewers, but with Twitter users having a history of deliberately participating in activations solely to lead to a fun result, it means that these Oscar criteria can help control the outcome. Even if the “winner”, as decided by the movie that receives the most tweets, is an absurd or unexpected choice, the ceremony will at least know that it will not be left entirely to the masses.
In addition to the Oscars launching a campaign to select the favorite movie of 2021 by fans, they also launched a campaign for the #OscarsCheerMoment in the hope of highlighting the most festive movie sequence of the year.
The Oscar ceremony will take place on March 27.
