Although the latestMagic“film”,The Devil made me do it,” wasn’t as gross as the first two films in the franchise, it would be silly to call it a failure. by James Wan The “magical” films, and by extension, the cinematic universe he created, are made on relatively small budgets and all turn a huge profit. Realistically, Wan and his production company could release new “Conjuring” movies for the next decade and be fine. However, it looks like that may be coming to an end.
Talking to you Acceleratorwhile promoting his production company’s new film, “M3GAN,” James Wan talked about the future of “The Conjuring” franchise. And from the looks of it, he’s not all that interested in milking the life out of the film series. In fact, the fourth film, which is still in development, may mark the end of “The Conjuring.”
“Yeah, we’re working on that right now,” Wan said of a fourth “Conjuring.” “With the ‘Conjuring’ movies, we’re precious [them]. And so we want to take some time to make sure that we get it right and to make sure that the feeling of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and going into, and possibly ending, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the correct story we are telling”.
In response to a follow-up question about “The Conjuring 4” being the end of the road for the Warrens’ story, Wan said, “We never know. You never know. We’ll see.”
Obviously, even if James Wan were to put an end to the ‘Conjuring’ movies, that wouldn’t be the end of the entire franchise. There have already been several spinoffs, including “Annabel“, “The Nun,” and more.” But what really stands out is the ending of the story that follows the Warrens, a married couple investigating supernatural horrors.
The most recent “Conjuring” film, which was released in June 2021, was the first film in the trilogy not to have Wan behind the camera as director. Replaced by Michael Chaves. Although the film didn’t achieve the box office success of the first two, it earned more than $206 million at a time when the pandemic is hitting theaters hard. It was also released simultaneously on HBO Maxwhich we saw take a bite out of the box office of a bunch of Warner Bros films that year.
We’ll just have to wait and see if James Wan is willing to pull the plug on “The Conjuring” film series when we learn more about the fourth film, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later.
