Legendary director John Waters has failed to secure funding for Liarmouth, which would have been his first film in 20 years
In October 2022, it was announced that legendary director John Waters, who brought us films such as Pink Flamingo, Hair spray, Cry baby, Serial mom, Cecil B. Dementiaand Pecker (among others), was working with Village Roadshow Pictures on an adaptation of his “craziest” novel, Liarmouth. We’ve since heard that Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation) is up for the lead role in the film, which would mark Waters’ first directorial debut since 2004 A dirty shame… but if you are wondering why Liarmouth still hasn’t gone into production a year and a half after it was announced, Waters gives a response in a new interview with IndieWire: couldn’t get funding for it.
When he was asked a Liarmouth status update, Waters said, “I’m not going to… [Starts to laugh.] Every time I comment on it, some article comes out that challenges me hell, saying we’re making the movie. I’ll say it one more time, and there’s no scoop here, there’s nothing new I’m telling you, but… [Village Roadshow] they optioned the book, I wrote the script, they loved it, Aubrey [Plaza] he loves the script, he wants to be in it, I want her to be in it, and every single person said, “No, we don’t have a dime of the budget.” That’s where it is today. Hopefully that will change. But the answer as of today? This is.“
Waters’ novel (pick up a copy HERE) has the following description: Marsha Sprinkle: Suitcase thief. Crook. Master of Disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s troubled, and she’s running around with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth—until a madman makes her tell the truth.
How do you feel about John Waters not being able to get funding? Liarmouth? You hope to see Waters get a chance to direct a new film twenty years from now A dirty shame? Let us know by leaving a comment below. I think it’s a really dirty shame that Waters would have trouble making a movie.
