Karan Johar on the hit: If they called me Karan Kashyap…

by Joe Bourn

Karan Johar’s recent film ‘Kill’ is an action thriller and was recently screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. While promoting the film, the director spoke about battling the perception that Dharma Production only produces films for “rich” people.

KARAN JOHAR CHALLENGES THE PERCEPTION OF DARMA PRODUCTION

During the post-screening discussion after the premiere of ‘Kill’, Karan Johar was asked how he thought of such a project given that it was so different from the films he makes under his banner. He said, “I’m trying to break this perception that Dharma Productions is burdened by this because I keep getting asked ‘Oh, you only do family films’ or ‘You only do NRI-friendly films or ‘You do films for rich people. It’s really ridiculous to get poked.”

KARAN JOHAR SAYS HE IS CONVICTED

He further said, making a crude reference to filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, “You are doomed by perception. If my name was Karan Kashyap, I would do much better with a certain section of people. It’s like I’m doomed by my name.”

Anurag Kashyap is one of the most respected directors and is known for producing gritty films. His films like ‘Black Friday’, ‘Dev D’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Ugly’ have won critical acclaim. Interestingly, Karan Johar himself acted as a villain in Anurag Kashyap’s film ‘Bombay Velvet’.
