As new Blade As the film continues its long gestation process, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offers a little insight into the company’s approach to the reboot.
Feig sat with him BlackTree TV to promote Disney’s July 26 release Deadpool & Wolverine. During the interview released on Saturday, the film producer was asked about the ongoing development of a new Bladewhich was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 with Mahershala Ali starring as the half-vampire character of the title.
The Marvel honcho was asked if Disney is on the move Deadpool & Wolverine with an R rating changes how the group approaches Bladesince the previous films — which starred Wesley Snipes and began with his original 1998 Blade — all rated R. “I think that’s right,” Feige replied. “I mean, for the last couple of years, as we’ve been trying to make this movie, the most important thing for us is to take our time and make sure we’re doing the right thing. Blade film.”
He continued, “Because there were some great ones Blade movies years ago — they were all rated R. So I think that, like Deadpool, is innate to the character of Blade.”
New Blade made headlines last month with the news that director Yann Demange had dropped out of the film. This followed the project previously scheduled to begin production in the fall of 2022, when director Bassam Tariq dropped out over creative differences.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ali’s attorney, Shelby Weiser, discussed the difficult process of making the film. Weiser said of Ali’s signing Blade: “This deal was in 2019 and they still haven’t done it, which is pretty much the craziest thing in my professional experience.”
