Today, the Afro-Latin quartet Making Movies shares their latest single and lyric video “Porcelina” with Alaina Moore from Tennis, from their upcoming XOPA album which will be released on June 17 through Cosmica Artists.
The single, which premiered today on Sounds and Colors, is a sweetly wonderful soundtrack to the story of a powerful, female oracle. Describing the inspiration, songwriter and singer Enrique Chi shared: “This song is dedicated to women who show up at just the right time to advise and care for us. My grandmother, Alice, comes to mind and to our mothers. Of course, but there were many others. It’s Porcelain, these magical people who are stuck and can feel what you need before you know you need it.
Discussing his collaboration with Alaina Riley, Enrique continued: “It was so much fun writing with Alaina. We have been friends since we were teenagers and he has always been one of those magical people.”
Their upcoming XOPA album transcends soundtracks, connects old and geographically distant cultural stories and, in the process, delivers a sound that is undoubtedly future. The ten pieces embrace the intermediate lows as long as one loves the lows that are critical to self-acceptance, to a degree of openness that makes life worthwhile.
The first two singles “Calor” and “Sala De Los Pecadores” perfectly indicate the intersection of culture and art with the mixture of Memphis soul and salsa sensibilities. Afropunk recently said: “Making Movies is a bit late, but their new single ‘Sala De Los Pecadores’ may be what pushes them aside. The new cut perfectly combines alt rock and cumbia with a video “It ‘s heavy, fun and full of moments of sonic overtaking.”
XOPA does more than challenge music standards. avoids them all together to create a broader vision of what music can be. The album includes additional performances by guitarist Marc Ribot on “La Primera Radio”, a vocal collaboration with Rubén Blades, Dolores Huerta and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos on “Consejos”, violin and viola by Grammy nominee musician and composer Jeremy Kittel. and more.
Making Movies is on tour across North America, including a performance at The Paramount in Los Angeles on June 23 that concludes at the Sisters Folk Festival in Portland on September 30. New dates have been added including New York, Portland, Memphis, Philadelphia and more, as well as festivals such as Maple and Main Music and Arts Festival, Boulevardia Music Festival, Summerfest, Blissfest and Ruido Fest.
