Mike Flanagan will direct the new film ‘The Exorcist’ at Blumhouse

Blumhouse has officially announced that veteran horror writer Mike Flanagan is back Doctor sleep and Netflix Haunting anthology series, will direct a new installment at The Exorcist privilege. Flanagan is set to write, direct and produce what is described as “a radical new take” on the iconic horror series in partnership with genre producer Blumhouse and Morgan Creek.

This development follows last year’s impressive box office performance, The Exorcist: Believer, which grossed $65.5 million in the US and Canada and $136.2 million worldwide. The film’s director, David Gordon Green, has since stepped away from the franchise, making way for Flanagan’s fresh vision.

According to a press release, the upcoming film will feature an entirely new story set within The Exorcist universe, different from the 2023 film. Flanagan will produce the film through the newly formed Red Room Pictures, along with Intrepid Pictures’ Trevor Macy. John Scherer will also executive produce for Intrepid.

This project marks the fourth collaboration between Flanagan and Blumhouse. The duo has previously collaborated on successful horror projects such as Oculus (2013), Silence (2016) and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016). Macy’s, the production of these films, continues to work closely with Flanagan.

Flanagan said:The Exorcist he’s one of the reasons I became a director and I’m honored to have the opportunity to try something fresh, bold and scary in his universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite projects, makes this all the more exciting.”

Blumhouse founder Jason Blum added, “Mike’s voice and vision are essential for horror fans, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new understanding of his world The Exorcist and I can’t wait for the audience to experience it.”

David Robinson, President and CEO of Morgan Creek, echoed that sentiment, saying, “It’s an honor to work with Mike. I think his vision for this franchise will amaze audiences around the world, and I couldn’t be more excited to work with him, Trevor, Jason and the entire team at Blumhouse.”
