Netflix and anime go hand in hand right now. Case in point: Ultraman: Rising, the latest in a long line of exciting new movies and anime shows this year, debuted to a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score just days before release.
As of this writing, Ultraman: Rising sits pretty much on one 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Mind you, it’s still early days: only eight reviews have been used as weightings for this set – but it’s an extremely promising start.
Centering on baseball star Ken Sato as he takes on the mantle of Ultraman (an extremely popular superhero in Japan), the hero must juggle saving the day while guarding a 35-foot-long baby Kaiju, Emi.
“It has a touch of Looney Tunes, a little bit of Japanese children’s series from the 70s and a lot of my daughter when she was little,” director Shannon Tindle told SFX of the inspirations behind Emi. “One of the biggest rewards from the early screenings has been watching people connect with Emi on a personal level. That’s an incredible feeling.”
Netflix has many more anime and animated adventures for this year. Occult Season 2 hits our screens in November, and now we have an interesting poster to help tide you over the months-long wait.
A Tomb Raider animated series is also in the works, and the new trailer shows off the Hayley Atwell-voiced adventurer in fine style.
Elsewhere, the first season of one of the best anime of the year – Delicious in Dungeon – ends this week after taking the streamer by storm.
Ultraman: Rising is coming to Netflix on June 14th. For more, check out our picks for the best anime on Netflix.
