A new report detailing upcoming events Blue beetle film teased similarities between the new DC Universe hero and Marvel’s Spiderman.
Fetching the third of four new DC films to hit the big screen in 2023 for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), Blue beetle will introduce a hero who had never gotten his own theatrical spotlight in Jaime Reyes. Featuring an all-star cast of actors including comedy icon George Lopez and Susan SarandonXolo Maridueña will play Reyes as the young teenager embraces his new superpowers.
In the comics, Reyes gains these powers after interacting with a holy scarab, which he finds in an empty parking lot before the scarab fuses with him as he sleeps.
Now, not only is this story seemingly being adapted for the character’s live-action adaptation, but it also brings back memories of one of the biggest names in the comic book realm from Marvel as well.
Blue Beetle that brings Spider-Man vibes
The latest issue of Total Film magazine shared new plot details from the upcoming Warner Bros. film. Discovery for the DC Universe Blue beetlewhich is set to hit theaters in the summer of 2023.
The article notes that Jaime Reyes “finds an alien beetle” as he comes home from school, which bonds with his body and unlocks an incredible suit of alien armor:
“Jaime finds an alien beetle on his way home from school, the creature strapping to his spine to fit him with a suit of alien armor.”
This story is similar to what fans have seen in the Marvel universe with Spider-Man. The web-slinger gains its own powers in the same way that it is affected by a bug-like creature, which is the classic radioactive spider.
DC does this slightly differently, as Peter Parker and the other Spider-Men don’t have the spider attached to them when they get their powers like Blue Beetle does. However, Jaime’s origin feels like another iconic moment from Peter Parker’s history.
Spidey is known for wearing the symbiote suit in many forms of media, first appearing in Secret Wars history in comics.
The alien’s origin with its end user is incredibly similar to Jaime Reyes’ Scarab, as both are alien, sentient beings that attach themselves to their users.
This also mimics tendencies seen in another Spider-Man character, Poison. The story of this anti-hero begins when an alien symbiote joins Eddie Brock, taking over his body and imbuing him with powers.
This similarity is further echoed in the recently released synopsis for the film, which notes that the scarab “chooses Jaime to be his symbiotic host.”
“Recent college graduate Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of ambition for his future, only to find that home is not as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiote host, he is gifted with an incredible suit of armor capable of changing his destiny forever as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.”
Blue Beetle’s inspiration from Comic Book Lore
While Jaime Reyes’ story doesn’t copy everything from Spider-Man’s legacy (death of uncle/family member, great power/great responsibility, etc.), those ties can’t be ignored as the hero debuts on the big screen.
And especially with the new DC character being a college graduate, he’s even more connected to Peter Parker as Tom Holland’s MCU hero wants to make his own college journey once Spider-Man 4 come true.
This story about Blue beetle it also adds the symbiotic side with the scarab attaching itself to Jaime Reyes, though it’s unclear if this artifact will take on its own personality like Venom. At least, it will join unique aspects from many heroes under the Marvel umbrella while adding some unique elements that will make this new hero stand on his own for DC.
Blue beetle will open in theaters on August 18, 2023.
