New look at Nintendo’s animated film

by Stewart Cole

We’re less than a month away from not having one, but two Super Mario Bros. movie theater into existence. The movie Super Mario Bros opens April 5 and it comes not only from the game’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto but also from the minds behind it Minions. Its latest trailer is here and it’s crazy.

The people who made this are why—despite the eclectic, controversial voice, which features Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Charlie Day as Luigi—we’re cautiously optimistic about the film’s ability to bring us back to the joy of sitting in front of our Nintendos, smashing blocks, and stomping on Goombas. Here is the new trailer of the movie, even more so than beforeit just goes full blast.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie | Final trailer

In addition to Pratt, Taylor-Joy and Day, the film includes Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. It was written by Matthew Fogel and directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

So what do we think? Will this movie be as fun and memorable as the video games? Looks like it might pack too much? If the Smash Bros. and Mario Kart are things that common? Will there actually be enough story or character to sustain a full movie, or will it be all sizzle and no steak? At least we know the sizzle — the look of the film and its attention to detail when it comes to toys — is absolutely there. Every inch of Mushroom Kingdom seems to be crafted with incredible care and love for the game’s iconic characters and the franchise. Hopefully this will carry over into the script as well.

The movie Super Mario Bros opens April 5.
