Dhoom 2, released in 2006, had Abhishek playing the role of a police officer, the same role he played in the film’s prequel, and Hrithik played the sly Mr A who thrives on robbing valuables from around the world . When Amitabh learned about Sanjay’s comments, he made his displeasure known publicly. In a conversation with Prabhu Chawla on Seedhi Baat, Bachchan said that it was very “humble” of the director to criticize an actor from his own film.
“I read that interview where he said about Abhishek that in Dhoom, it’s over, he got beaten up. I think it is very humiliating for any director to criticize an actor from his own film. If you didn’t like Abhishek then why did you hire him? And if you have hired him, then why criticize him?’ asked.
It was obvious that Hrithik had a bigger, gentler role in the film and Amitabh acknowledged the same. “His (Hrithik) co-star’s role was bigger and better, according to the script, and that’s how it should be. But now, saying that because of this, the other actor (Abhishek), is beaten, I found it very low,” he said.
When asked if Abhishek should not do the film, Amitabh said he was proud of his son for doing the role, even though he knew he had a smaller role. He said, “I’m proud of him for doing that role because he knew what the role was. He had a good relationship with producer Aditya Chopra, he told him to make the film. Even though he knew he had a smaller piece, he did it.”
Amitabh also emphasized that the Dhoom franchise was the cop story and “if he (Abhishek) was not there in this film, then there was no story. But because this is Dhoom 2, and he was there in Dhoom 1, and if there are other Dhoom movies in the future, his character will still be there because he is the cop.”
After directing the first two Dhoom films, Sanjay Gadhvi did not return to direct Dhoom 3. The third film in the franchise, starring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Uday Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan, was directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya. Sanjay later directed films like Kidnap and Ajab Gazabb Love. His last directorial venture was 2020’s Operation Parindey, released on ZEE5.
