Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday told Bharatiya Janata Party workers and leaders to refrain from making unnecessary remarks on unrelated issues like films, a message that comes amid controversies surrounding Bollywood films.
Addressing his second day BJP national executive meetsModi suggested that unnecessary remarks on unrelated issues like films put the party’s development agenda on the backburner, PTI reported.
In recent times, several films, TV shows and web shows have been at the center of controversies as they have faced allegations of hurting Hindu sentiments and culture. The latest film to bear the brunt of the boycott calls is the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Pathaan’. The song ‘Besharam Rang’ in the film which shows actress Deepika Padukone wearing a saffron bikini has not gone down well with sections of the society, including BJP leaders like Narottam Mishra and Ram Kadam.
Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh Narottam Mishra had even threatened to block the spy action thriller’s release if certain scenes were not “fixed”. The minister had said the scenes were “highly unacceptable” and were filmed with a “dirty mentality”.
Mishra has a history of opposing films, web shows and advertisements that he has described as offensive to the Hindu religion. In October last year, the BJP leader had warned the builders of “Adipurush,” based on the Ramayana, for legal action if scenes showing Hindu religious figures in an allegedly wrong way were not removed.
BJP MLA Ram Kandam also opposed the song, calling it an insult to the Hindu religion. In a tweet, the legislator said that Maharashtra has a government with Hindutva ideology and the makers of the film should explain to the saints who are hurt by the song.
“Any film or serial that insults Hindutva in Maharashtra will not be (screened). Is the one who supported JNU deliberately harming the ideology of ‘janeu dhari’ (those who wear the sacred thread of Hindus)?” he added.
