NEW ORLEANS — Hollywood made an appearance in the Crescent City Thursday night for the Skip the Film Festival Opening at Prytania Theaters Uptown.
One of the first films to take center stage was the world premiere of Nicolas Cage’s new vampire film Renfield.
“I try to combine the scary with the funny at the same time,” Cage said. “That was the challenge.”
Moviegoers got a chance to see if Cage succeeded in this mission. The film debuted at the festival known for celebrating all things horror, haunting and historical.
“The Crescent City can be charming,” Cage said. “And it can be a bit unnerving, you just don’t know what’s around the corner and I think that’s the perfect location for a film like Renfield.”
The Overlook Film Festival is proud of its host city, calling New Orleans “America’s Most Haunted City.” Renfield director Chris McKay feels the same way.
“Overall, it’s a really nice town,” McKay said. “You have an amazing crew, a great cast. We’ve cast many of our supporting characters here and we’ll definitely be back.”
Interim chair of Loyola University’s film program, Miles Dolaec, participated in the film. He says it was a dream to work with Cage.
“Watching him do what he does was really something to see,” Dolaec said.
A total of 53 films will be screened this weekend during the four-day event.
