Steven Soderbergh has two new film projects he is working on — World of Reel

Steven Soderbergh is a worker. It never stops. Since retiring in 2017, he has averaged at least one movie or series a year since his resurgence.

His latest project is called “Full Circle,” an HBO series set to begin airing on July 13. The plot revolves around a bad kidnapping and the patchwork of characters affected by it. The cast includes Claire Danes, Dennis Quaid, Zazie Beetz and Timothy Olyphant.

Even though it hasn’t even aired yet, Soderbergh has confirmed to Variety that he has two new film projects next, he wants both of them to “get a regular wide release theatrically.” He adds that both are genre films and that one of them is a comedy.

The prolific 59-year-old director has bounced between psychological thriller, drama, and comedy, though he’s never allowed the films to lose that distinct Soderbergh touch. He’s a fan of the genre, but he pulls it off effortlessly.

He had originally retired in early 2013, clarifying that he had a five-year plan that saw him move away from making feature films when he reached his 50s.

And yet, as we speak, it’s a new decade, and so much for retirement. Soderbergh has released 8 films in the past 6 years, including 2022’s underrated “KIMI” and this year’s critically acclaimed “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.”

Without a doubt, Soderbergh is a master of mise-en-scène. without knowing that he was behind the camera, you can easily spot one of his films. He is a very visually oriented director. He prefers to show rather than tell the audience what is going on. His style is distinct, austere and economical — always filled with objectively told narratives.

While we’re at it, what are Soderbergh’s best movies? He had a lot of good ones, but the titles that really stand out for me are 1998’s “Out of Sight”, 1999’s “The Limey” and 2000’s “Traffic”.
