Back in 1982, Gavaskar was running in Lahore, Pakistan for a test race. It was during the third day of the Lahore Test match that the former cricketer and his team were invited to a Thanksgiving party.
Sunil remembers being at the door welcoming the guests with their manager Maharaja Fatehsinghrao Prataprao Gaekwad when Noor Jahan came and said he could not recognize her. When the Maharaja introduced Sunil saying “this is our captain, you should know him”, Nur replied saying, “no, I do not know him, I only know Imran Khan and Zahir.
Reviewing the incident, Sunil says, “I felt like salt in a wound” because Imraan and Zaheer were doing extremely well in the fights. Maharaja, meanwhile, believed he must have known her (Nur), to whom Sunil said he knew only Lata Ji.
Gavaskar also recalled that when he first heard Lata Mangeshkar’s song “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon”, he was so moved that at that moment, he felt as if he wanted to join the Indian Army. He was already successful at the time, but that’s how the song affected him.
