There’s a new horror movie that’s being unanimously praised by fans of the genre.
The new release, which is set to be released in July, has received extremely positive word of mouth since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
Directed by twin brothers Danny and Michael Filippou, the film follows a group of friends who hook into ghost plates using a stuffed hand.
One of them, a young woman played by Sophie Wilde, gets too involved in her curiosity with the supernatural and, after a session, unleashes terrifying powers.
The film also stars Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Marcus Johnson and Alexandria Steffensen.
Damon Wise, who writes for Deadline Hollywoodsaid that Talk to me “it tries to do something new with an old idea,” adding that it “makes going through the gates of hell seem like an awful lot of fun.”
The film has been compared to The Exorcist with Jobloby Chris Bumbray, who said Joe Bird’s portrayal of a “possessed” character is the best screen performance since Linda Blair in William Friedkin’s 1974 film; The Exorcist.
In the meantime, Slant MagazineChuck Bowen said that “the film’s major achievement is how it manages to ground the possession in the reality of modern teenage life.”
In Letterboxd, Evolution of Horror host Mike Muncer called it “my favorite horror movie of 2023 so far,” with Andrew Pope adding: “When you know where it’s going it’s terrifyingly, soul-crushingly bleak. A movie you won’t want to fall asleep right away.”
Pope also praised the climax as “an all-time horror movie ending”.
Talk to me will have its UK premiere at the Sundance Film Festival: London, which runs from July 6-9.
It will be released in theaters on July 28.
