It has been ten years since audiences returned to Woodsboro and the financial failure of 2011 Scream 4 almost made it look like the meta-slasher franchise was over forever. Like the killer at the end of the movie, though, they always come back and this week Scream, the fifth in the series, was released. For the most part, the new Scream movie references the original trilogy of the series and devotes a lot of time to creating the new character collection, but an extended plot thread from Scream 4 was officially confirmed in the movie with the thinnest possible, namely that a character really survived. Possible spoilers follow!
Although the return of inherited characters was a big part Scream 4The repercussions of his top fans at the time, but just like the new film, some of the fresh faces that appeared ended up becoming favorite franchises. Among those found in Scream 4 it was Heroes starring Hayden Panettiere as Kirby Reed, Jill’s best friend Emma Roberts and the new movie obsession specialist for the 2011 sequel. Scream 4 Kirby is thought to have died after being stabbed by Rory Culkin’s Charlie and left to die, but Scream 2022 confirms that Kirby is alive and well.
In a moment that mocks YouTube accounts dedicated to the shooting of major movie franchises, a flashing Easter egg on the side confirms Kirby’s fate. Next to the main video being played is a suggested video titled “Interview with Woodsboro Survivor Kirby Reed” and a photo of Panettiere as a thumbnail.
There is no further mention of Kirby in the film and it is possible that this Easter egg was there to give fans of the series some closure for a character whose death was incredibly ambiguous. To go a step further, though, it may be the seed planted for a possible sixth Scream movie, bringing Panettiere’s Kirby with Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy Meeks-Martin, the character of the 2022 movie obsessed with cinema.
“This new cast of characters is so wonderful. The hereditary cast is so wonderful,” recalled co-director Tyler Gillett in Total Film earlier. “I think what we discovered and what [screenwriters] Guy [Busick] and James [Vanderbilt] did, they found a real reason to have the next story. We know that there is more gas in the tank. “There are more stories to be told in Woodsboro, and certainly about these characters.”
