A new version of The Phantom of the Opera is coming to the big screen, Deadline References.
Universal will make a new film based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Phantom. However, France will become the French Quarter, as this version will take place in modern New Orleans.
The plot of the film is described as being followed by a neo-soul singer, led by a mysterious man, as accidents happen in a famous club that tries to stay alive.
Produced by John Legend and written by John Fusco – was the creator of the Netflix series Marco Polo and has written the scripts for other films such as The Highwaymen, starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson, the animated film plans. Phantom of the Opera had previously been adapted for the screen in 1925, but its most famous adaptation is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which has been shown on Broadway and the West End since the 1980s. The original story follows an opera singer and a ghost that haunts the Paris Opera.
