While fans eager to learn more about Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories series, it was suddenly announced that the series ended with season 5. However, instead of the 6th season of The Last Kingdom, fans will receive a feature film entitled “The Seven Kings Must Die”.
The British historical drama The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell’s novel The Saxon Stories. The series tells the story of a warrior named Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The Last Kingdom Season 5 has covered the 9th and 10th series of the novel – “The Warriors of the Storm” and “The Flame Bearer”. It was the last chapter of the series to air on Netflix 9 in March 2022.
But the question remains: Will “Seven Kings Must Die” start at the end of Season 5?
At MCM London Comic-Con, executive producer Nigel Marchant said: “Although the fifth season completes the series, we always wanted to tell one more story. we just could not resist one last trip with Uhtred. “
The film is set to serve as an “autonomous” sequel inspired by the latest novels in the Bernard Cornwell series: War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings and War Lord. The star of the series, Alexander Dreymon, and the executive producer of the series, Nigel Marchant, spoke to the Radio Times about why they ended after its fifth season.
Alexander Dreymon said, “We always planned it to be just five seasons, so it was no surprise to anyone. When we started, there were only 10 books and so that was the arc we designed … I’m very happy with the way it went.”
Executive producer Nigel Marchant said it was a “joint decision” between production company Carnival and distributor Netflix, which he believes came at the “right time”.
“You always want to be on top and improve season by season and 10 hours is … there are a lot of stories you tell in it and you have to be careful not to repeat it,” Marchant said.
Fans hope to get all their answers on “Seven Kings Must Die”. “Season 5 looks like the end of the TV series and the film will be much more independent. It will be an added pleasure for fans of the TV series, but you can also watch it even if you have never seen the TV show.” , said Marchant.
He also explained that “it’s always a challenge: how do we fight a battle differently? How can we make sure battles are fought through emotions and not just a lot of people fighting that you are not interested in? And how long can you keep going with these two issues? without ever reaching a climax? “
He added: “What we really wanted to do was finish [in a way] which everyone thought was satisfying – which I hope we did – and that we had almost 50 episodes that felt like you had a beginning, a middle and an end. I think it is always better to edit it, than to end and not finish telling the story “.
