Robert Downey Jr. helped bring to life a movie about his father (Robert Downey Sr.), aptly titled, Sr.which has now been acquired by Netflix and will be released on streaming platform this fall. The film focuses on RDJ’s father and his achievements as a director, but more than that, the documentary also aims to delve heavily into the relationship between father and son and focuses on generational dysfunction. This might explain a bit of the problems RDJ faced while being an up-and-coming actor in the 1980s and 1990s.

The film is produced by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey, according to the production company they founded called Team Downey. Sr. intended to bring to life RDS’s contribution to filmmaking in the 1960s, particularly his importance in the field of counterculture, as the director is best known for his parody of 1969 Madison Ave., in a film called Putney Swope.

Chris Smith is its director Sr.and the man who worked famously Fire, Bad Vegan, Operation Varsity Blues, and Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond. Smith discussed covering a film about Robert Downey Jr. and his father, stating that “What started as a simple documentary quickly turned into anything other than knowing what I know now, it’s really the only way you can business to do something to the two Downeys. ”

Team Downey also had success on Netflix, as Robert Downey Jr. and his wife’s production company assisted in the production Sweet tooth, which is now entering its second season on the streaming platform. The same can be said for director Chris Smith, as his documentarian Fire, was one of the biggest movies Netflix has ever seen. This new RDS documentary should be quite successful and the idea is to ensure that the documentary is considered for the Oscars.

Sr. made its official debut at the Telluride Film Festival, which was attended by Robert Downey Jr., as it was revealed that he is set to hit the road with the film to promote the Oscars. The documentary will be screened at the upcoming New York Film Festival on October 10th and 11th and will then head to Netflix. We’re guessing the documentary will air around November or December on the streaming platform.

Robert Downey Jr. lost his father in July 2021 at the age of 85, and we expect this documentary to mean the world to the actor, as his father was clearly very special to him. RDJ is also going to give everyone a more detailed look at the relationship between him and his father through the documentary, so we imagine the film will be special for those who have been RDJ fans over the years and those who are fans now of due to his time at Marvel.

We are more than excited to see Sr., and how it shows one of the most dynamic father-son relationships in film history. Catch the documentary over the holiday season on Netflix, and expect Robert Downey Jr. to promote the film more on his social media platforms.
