The Top Stories of the Popverse Era
We've been expecting this news sometime in the near future, but not this soon: Jurassic World is coming back with a new movie, and the writer behind the project is no stranger to the franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter dropped the exclusive bombshell yesterday, January 22, claiming that the project has been flying under the radar for a while and already has a script in pretty decent shape. Additionally, Steven Spielberg's longtime collaborator David Koepp, who wrote Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park of Michael Crichton's novels, currently handling drafts. This is an interesting – though not entirely unexpected – decision, as the Jurassic World trilogy was completely shepherded by Colin Trevorrow and other younger screenwriters.
Despite disappointing reviews and fan backlash, Jurassic World: Dominion (2022) more than justified its existence with a $1 billion worldwide at the box office, so it makes perfect sense that Universal and Amblin want to move on to a sequel sooner rather than later. Even before the release of Dominion, veteran producer Frank Marshall teased more movies after completing the six-film arc that began in 1993.
Plot details for this new “soft reboot” are being kept under wraps. THR's sources confirm that it's ushering in a “new Jurassic era” and an overarching storyline that will seemingly move forward rather than reboot the franchise. Looking at the Dominion's protracted storylines and extensive world-building (with planet Earth's ecosystems now also home to many prehistoric species due to humanity's intervention), it's not hard to imagine one or two possible directions it could be headed in the line.
With the project being mailed as we speak and unconfirmed rumblings of production likely to begin in the coming months, expect updates soon.
