The latest Matrix movie The Matrix Resurrections will now see the light of day in China after the film went through quite strict content regulations.
The film was given the “green light for a possible release in theaters”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
There is no specific release date yet, but the end of 2021 is quite possible.
The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth Matrix movie after The Matrix (1999), The Matrix has been reloaded and The Matrix revolutions (2003).
Gaining a pass in China is a huge affair, as international markets can be lucrative for US blockbusters. For example, Avengers: Endgame is the seventh highest-grossing film in China of all time, with a cash withdrawal $ 629,100,000 in the country.
Studios are increasingly relying on potential international numbers when justifying a film, although it sometimes fails with China.
For example, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a fairly big success for Marvel in the pandemic era, was banned in the country due to a controversial Fu Manchu character that did not even appear in the final cut.
Other movies like Mulan and Crazy rich Asians, did not do well in the country.
The news about the “green light” in China could have a huge impact on the overall screening of the film at the box office.
Directed and written by Resurrections was done by Lana Wachowski, while the previous iterations were a collaboration between Lana Wachowski and sister Lilly Wachowski. The latter recently said that she did not want to return to the trilogy.
“[Lana] had come up with this idea for another “Matrix” movie, and we had this discussion, and it really was – we started talking about it in the meantime [our] Dad dies too [our] Mom was dying, five weeks apart. And there was something in the idea of going back and being part of something I had done before, that was explicitly unattractive. And, like, I did not want to go through my transition and go through this huge upheaval in my life, the feeling of being lost by my mom and dad, wanting to go back to something I did before, and sort of [walk] on old paths I had walked, I felt emotionally unfulfilled, and vice versa, as if I was going to go back and live with these old shoes, somehow. And I did not want to do that. “
The Matrix Resurrections HBO Max (for one month) hits theaters on December 22.
