It’s been a long time coming, but the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 finally raced online and confirmed one of the biggest rumors: Keanu Reeves is voicing his villain, Shadow the Hedgehog.
Released today (August 27), the first teaser for one of the last new movies of 2024 is difficult and quickly as Paramount Pictures begins ramping up its marketing campaign for the highly anticipated sequel. And, what better way to build on the hype than to reveal beloved actor Keanu Reeves lending his instantly recognizable voice to Shadow, one of Sonic’s most notable adversaries.
The teaser is, by design, quite heavy – indeed, it’s nearly three minutes long. Usually, such a running time leads to a trailer that essentially gives away the entire plot of a film, but it seems Sonic 3Its first look is holding back certain elements of its story until it hits theaters around the world.
That said, the trailer doesn’t give away every secret. Yeah, we’ve been waiting for Shadow to show up Sonichis latest live-action hybrid animated film – he was teased Sonic 2The scene after his concerts, after all – but I didn’t expect to hear Reeves mouthing words as the anthropomorphic hedgehog created in the lab until I took my seat at the screening. This would have kept it a mystery, but perhaps Paramount (in conjunction with Sega, Sonic the Hedgehogcreator) felt it necessary to include Reeves’ work, especially with his involvement being leaked months before the trailer was revealed. Regardless, Reeves feels like an adventurous fit for Shadow and, after similar voice work he’s done Toy Story 4 and Cyberpunk 2077recording lines for an animated project would be no stranger to him.

Reeves’ involvement isn’t the only thing Sonic 3reveals its first teaser. Before I get into that though, here’s a quick story synopsis that reveals a little more about the movie: “Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most exciting adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite Against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they’ve faced before, Team Sonic must seek an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.
So what’s the unexpected plot-teasing collaboration? As the trailer establishes, Team Sonic will be forced to ally with none other than Doctor Eggman, aka Sonic’s iconic adversary in his video game franchise and villain in the first two films. That means Jim Carrey is back to play the mad scientist once again, despite hinting that he’s retiring from acting after Sonic 2 comes out in early 2022. Clearly, Team Sonic needs all the help they can get. get to stop a seemingly distressed Shadow from threatening Earth’s very existence.
Jeff Fowler, who directed the first two Sonic movies, he’s back in the director’s chair for this one. Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally and Lee Majdoub join Carrey in the returning cast roster. Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter also join Reeves in the newcomer casting.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to hit theaters worldwide on December 21st, and there’s plenty of blue blur-themed content to keep you busy until then. The previous movies are both available on Paramount Plus, also known as one of the best streaming services, right now. The franchise’s first television spin-off, Jointsalso launched on the same platform earlier this year, with the series on pace to become the streamer’s most popular TV Original to date.
