MonsterVerse has another hit on its hands! Certainly, although critical welcome to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was blended (CinemaBlend’s Godzilla x Kong Reviews were among positive with a 4/5 star rating), the latest film in this Titan-filled franchise has grossed over $548 million worldwide at the time of writing, making it a commercial success. So it’s no big deal to hear that Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment want to move forward with a sequel, and I’m excited for it Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings talent reportedly involved in the project.
Almost a month and a half later Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire released in the 2024 film schedule, THR has learned that Dave Callaham, who co-wrote the 25th Marvel film in a row, has been tapped to write the next MonsterVerse film. This won’t be Callaham’s first time working on the franchise, as he received a ‘Story By’ credit for 2014 Godzilla, but assuming this news is accurate, then he’ll now be putting together a full script for the next Godzilla/Kong team-up. in addition to Shang-Chihis other credits include Wonder Woman 1984, Mortal Kombatand Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseand also writes the upcoming Masters of the Universe film and Disney’s live-action remake Hercules.
As for the previous MonsterVerse films starring both Godzilla and Kong, Godzilla vs. Kong written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein and based on a story by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields. Written by Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett and Jeremey Slater Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirewith the former two discussing the story with director Adam Winged, who directed both films.
The THR article states that Legendary would like Wingard back in the director’s chair for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, and previously teased that he has plans for a third Godzilla/Kong film. However, the director’s return is not necessarily guaranteed. In addition to being set for the Face-off sequel, he also wants to make an original film titled Attack for A24 before working on any other projects.
However, news of Dave Callaham working on this sequel is very welcome. Because if it wasn’t already clear from analyzing his body of work, the man knows his way around genre material. That’s not to say that another screenwriter won’t come along later down the line and either work with Callaham on the project or twist his script, but what Callaham comes up with is the overall backbone of this MonsterVerse movie, then it has the potential to be something great.
We’ll keep our eyes and ears out for more news on that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire follow. Don’t forget that MonsterVerse will continue as well Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 and other spinoff shows are being developed exclusively for Apple TV+ subscribers.
