The film was directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The cast of Jaani Dushman included names like Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy, Rekha, Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra and Bindiya Goswami. Rajkumar Kohli was also the producer of the film and it was produced under Shankar Movies. Laxmikant-Pyarelal composed the music in the film and Verma Malik penned the lyrics. The story of Jaani Dushman revolves around a monster, who kidnaps and kills brides.

The film became a superhit upon its release, grossing around 9 crore. Jaani Dushman was made on a budget of only Rs 1.3 crore, according to reports. It became the highest grossing film of the year. In 2002, Rajkumar Kohli made another film with the same title, called Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani. Reports say that it was Kohli’s last film as a director.
