Todd Field may be calling it quits after just three feature films. He made his feature directorial debut with In the bedroom in 2001 and followed it five years later with Young childrenbut fans had to wait over fifteen years before she returned to the director’s chair with him Tar. While he was talking to Cinema rangeTodd Field said it’s “very likely” that Tar will be his last film.
While some directors are able to churn out movie after movie for years, Todd Field doesn’t think he’s that type of director. “There is a real challenge in making a film of any size,Field said. “It’s not for the faint of heart. I wish I had been cut for different things, because I probably wouldn’t have done more films. It takes me a lot to make a movie. I don’t know that I’ll ever make another one. When asked to clarify if that meant that Tar would be the last film, Field said, “Yes I think so. I hadn’t thought of that until now. It is very possible.Field admitted that he might be open to making another film somewhere down the road. “I guess it’s possible,” he said. “I hope this is possible.“
Todd Field plans to continue writing, but the actual process of making a movie is too much. “If it was nice and easy, I’d keep coming back,Field said. “I do ads all the time, but that doesn’t get me much. I love the game, the techniques, experimenting with new gear that comes out before it ever hits the feature world, because I’m also a techie at heart. But that’s not my thing. These technical tools belong to multinational companies. But if something is really yours, and it really matters—and it better matter, for the time it takes to make a movie—you have to give it your all. And as you get older, you realize how precious time is, there’s only so much time on that hourglass. I’m not in my twenties or thirties anymore — I’ll be 60 in a year and a half. You start thinking about these things.“
We may have to wait and see if Tar ends up being Todd Field’s last movie, but I could certainly think of worse movies to go out with. The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Original Screenplay and Best Actress.
