The creators of the upcoming film Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui shot the entire film at Punjab Chandigarh in a zero-waste set. The film, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, stars Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor. The film is a co-production of T-Series Pragya Kapoor and Bhushan Kumar. The builders had commissioned a special workshop to manage the waste generated on the plate. With a proper system, the team managed to save 17,000 kilos of waste from going to landfills.
It was producer Pragya Kapoor who met Skrap, a company that manages waste generated at events and recycles or donates waste materials. Making films requires larger units and therefore the amount of waste generated is also huge. Scrap’s team ensured that their sets Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui had zero waste.
Speaking about the initiative, director Abhishek Kapoor said: “We had a small crew who overlooked all the waste we created and separated it. Whether it was wet rubbish or dry rubbish, plastic or non-plastic, and everything was recycled. In the end, we did not really hurt the planet”.
Ayushmann Khurrana also praised the initiative, saying it was the first time he had seen it on set. “I think the idea of a zero waste film is a great initiative and I’m proud to be part of this film, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui where we shot this film with almost zero waste. For example, if you use a plastic bottle, it leads to a lot of waste instead. “Use a distributor and everyone can benefit from it. In these most difficult times, we must definitely go for such initiatives and I am glad it happened in my hometown, Chandigarh,” he said.
He added: “We have recycled garbage. I have never heard this in any of my films. It is unique in its kind. I know it is a very unique year – 2020 – and we are doing unique things to raise awareness and I think we should to follow this model for other films as well “.
Manufacturers have avoided using 1000 plastic bottles every day, replacing them with water dispensers. All crew members also received reusable water bottles.
Sharing her thoughts on the initiative, Vaani said: “Well, I’m excited and excited about our efforts at the Zero Waste Film. Exactly from the entire crew who were given their own reusable water bottles to the carefully crafted bottles in their hotel rooms that had large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, bamboo toothbrushes. This has helped to avoid the many small packages commonly found in hotels and thus reduce the use of plastic. It was great to have more sustainable materials in our sets. ”
The team also distributed the excess food in sets to the needy. The Skrap team, in collaboration with the Robinhood Army and the Feeding Indian, ran food distribution routes, feeding thousands of low-income families. Most of the waste generated by the shooting was recycled, composted or donated.
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui will be released in theaters on December 10, 2021.
