West Side Story is not broadcast on HBO Max, sorry

This year we saw an unprecedented number of new theatrical films that were released on streaming services the same day they were released in cinemas. HBO Max, in particular, has become synonymous with practice. And HBO Max is still in progress King Richard, for the father of young Venus and Serena Williams, and will be streaming The Matrix Resurrections (also known as Matrix 4) from December 22.

But Steven Spielberg’s new approach West Side Story, which hit theaters on Friday, is not airing on HBO Max.

This is because the only movies on HBO Max that are still in theaters are Warner Bros. movies. West Side Story is released by 20th Century Studios, which is owned by Disney. King Richard and Matrix 4 are both Warner Bros. films that qualify for broadcast on HBO Max.

The strategy has created some misguided hopes among moviegoers when Any new movie coming out in theaters. Without knowing the studio that distributes this new movie, many people wonder if it is one of the movies available on HBO Max.

Occasionally, other studios follow the HBO Max playbook and drop a movie in theaters and on a streaming service at the same time. So Halloween Kills and Clifford the big red dog became available for release the same day they hit theaters, at Peacock and Paramount Plus respectively. (See below for more details on what movies are broadcast and what not and where.)

But it was HBO Max which made waves last year when it announced it he would run all of Warner Bros. ‘ new movies released in theaters in 2021 the same day they hit the big screen, at no extra charge. This is included Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, On high level and Space Jam: A New Legacy earlier this year, and includes The Matrix 4 subsequently.

But it also means that movies from any other studio will not be on Max on the same day.

Can I broadcast West Side Story on HBO Max?

The No. West Side Story is distributed by 20th Century Studios, part of Disney. It will have at least 45 days in theaters exclusively from Friday, so it will not be available for streaming anywhere.

But the first place you can broadcast West Side Story may be HBO Max, not for months. Disney owns 20th Century, the movie distributor, and yes, Disney owns Disney Plus and Hulu streaming services. But film licensing is complicated. Years ago, HBO locked in the rights to be the first movie broadcaster of the 20th century. Thus, HBO Max may be the first streaming service to be acquired by West Side Story, due to the pre-existing licensing agreement, even though Disney has owned 20th Century for years.

However, HBO Max is not expected to start streaming West Side Story until about six to nine months after its release in theaters.

Can I continue streaming Dune on HBO Max?

Not now. Dune aired on HBO Max for the first month of its release, but has already left the service.

These Warner Bros. movies also return to HBO Max relatively quickly, however, usually about five months after their premiere in theaters and at Max. Several movies have already premiered, disappeared and returned, such as Godzilla vs. Kong.

What about other movies in theaters now? Are Ghostbusters: Afterlife, House of Gucci or other theatrical films airing now?

Halloween Kills and Clifford the Big Red Dog are two of the few theatrical films now in theaters – but they are on other services than HBO Max.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is in progress Paramount Plus. The streaming service and studio distributing the film are owned by ViacomCBS, which has decided to release the film in cinemas and Paramount Plus at the same time.

Halloween Kills is over Peacock. Peacock is owned by Comcast NBCUniversal and is distributed by Universal Pictures Halloween Kills. But there is a paywall around the movie. You will need to sign up for a premium level of $ 5 per month or $ 10 per month if you want to watch Halloween Kills or any other Peacock program with paywalled. (HBO Max is the next sequel to Universal movies, such as Halloween Kills, to be released.

But almost any other movie in theaters is not currently available in streaming service.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is distributed by Sony Pictures, which makes it exclusive to cinemas. Sony has made an agreement for its 2021 movies to go first to Starz, where they are available to watch on its traditional channels or stream its application. So Starz will be the first place to stream this latest Sony movie, which will be available there in about nine months.

House of Gucci is distributed in the US by United Artists Releasing, not Warner Bros., and is exclusively in theaters after its release on Thanksgiving Weekend.

Encanto and Eternals – two of the latest Disney releases to reach the top of the US box office – are not available for streaming Yet. But they will be coming to Disney Plus soon: Encanto is set to launch there on December 24th and Eternals will be up and running on January 12th.

And most other movies have no streaming options. There is no time for death, Poison: Let there be a Massacre, Horns, Spencer, Last night in Soho, The French mission and Ron has gone wrong have all been released in theaters exclusively in recent months.

What new movies can Do I stream on HBO Max while it’s still in the movies?

In general, most other Warner Bros. new movies are available for release on Max at 12:01 p.m. PT / 3: 01 p.m. ET on the day of their release. But the arrival time for some movies like Dune varies, depending on when the first movie theaters hit. Wonder Woman 1984, for example, became available at 9 a.m. PT / noon ET on December 25, because they were the first theaters to be open that day. The Dune was on the same boat, arriving at the service at an informal time in the afternoon that it was released.

All Warner Bros. movies released on this “hybrid” model on HBO Max will be available for 4K Ultra HD viewing and HDR image quality, although these formats are not yet standard on the full Max library.

These movies are available for streaming on HBO Max for 31 days. They are usually removed from the service at 11:59 p.m. PT on the last day of availability.

But even these Warner Bros. movies return to HBO Max relatively quickly, usually about five months after their original theatrical and Max premieres. Several movies have already come, gone and returned, including Mortal Kombat and Godzilla Vs. Kong.

But 2021 is set to be the only year for this phenomenon of the flow of new big screen movies on HBO Max as soon as they hit theaters. Warner Bros. said 10 studio-produced films would go straight to HBO Max in 2022, but major franchise films would have 45 days in theaters exclusively with no streaming option during this period from next year.
