The new Netflix Don’t Look Up movie is full of stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, among others. But dedicating some of Adam McKay’s glittering screen time to the end of the world is the weird 2017 Red Hydrogen One phone.
Used by Leo and J-Law and sold as a Bash phone by the character Sir Peter Isherwell, played masterfully by Mark Rylance, who feels as if he has wandered off stage since the keynote address in Silicon Valley.
Don’t Look Up is the second film of 2021 to present the failed 3D screen phone. The The red phone was used by several characters in Fast and Furious 9 and was even placed on the board of the Dominic Toretto. But not all of these big screen appearances are the result of clever product placement. The fact is that you can not buy the $ 1,300 Hydrogen One. So what’s going on here?
On The CNET podcast I’m So Obsessed I asked McKay about the phone at Don’t Look Up. It turns out that the master of the film / former punk rocker of SoCal, Michael Bates introduced the phone to McKay.
“I remember asking him early, ‘Michael, how are we going to have a phone that doesn’t just look like your standard phones out there?’ said McKay. “And he says, ‘Do not worry. I’ll take care of it, “and then he comes back with this phone. He goes,” This is a whole cell phone made by Red Cam. They never released it. Check outside.’ And I started playing with it. I thought, “Why didn’t they release it? This is unbelievable.” “But it’s obviously not technically consumer-friendly.”
The Red Hydrogen One, despite its mediocre cameras that could record 4V video (Red’s mark for 3D), did not look like any other phone at the time. It has combed edges that are designed according to the lock of the lens base on some Red cinema cameras. The phone came in two versions: one made of aluminum and the other made of titanium. In terms of durability, it is one of the most stable phones I have ever tried. If I put it down, I would worry less about the phone and more about the floor.
As for his role in Don’t Look Up, I would say that Bates and McKay chose a phone that matches the ridiculousness of their movie. Don’t Look Up is available to stream on Netflix from December 24.
