Judwaa (1997) remains one of Hindi’s most beloved comedies, and with names such as actor Salman Khan and director David Dhawan associated with it, actor Dalip Tahil thinks it’s no surprise. Tahil played the role of Sanjay Path “SP” Malhotra, the father of the Raja and Prem twins (played by Khan).

The veteran actor says he was approached by Sajid Nadiadwala, the producer because he successfully played many father roles at the time. “I had worked with David in the past and Charisma Kapoor also in her first film Prem Qaidi. It was a lot of fun and Salman was very young. “It was a pleasure to work with such a fun guy.”

While his memory is naturally blurred for a 25-year-old film, he remembers Khan constantly making jokes at Kapoor. “We shot a lot of Judwaa in Hyderabad. While there was a lot of hard work on David’s set, it creates an atmosphere of relaxation, fun. “The film was shot smoothly,” says Tahil.

At a time when technology was not very advanced and films were still being shot on raw material, Dhawan made a difficult film with a dual role. And Tahil points it out. “It was obviously very difficult. Congratulations to Salman and David’s confidence that he gave Salman a double role so early in his career. It was good that Dvdid was technologically sound, as he had started his career as an editor. He later became a director later. “He knew exactly what it was like to shoot for a double role, so he could do it.”

He praises the fact that people watch David’s films and do not realize that while he was making light films, he was also always technically sound. “The timing was crucial for these scenes. It was also the producer’s delight because he never pulled anything extra, he never wasted raw eastman coor stock, which was very expensive. The first thing the producer would say after hearing a dual role was the amount of raw stock used. “That was a big reason why David was named producer director,” says Tahil.
