Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri took to Twitter on Saturday to indirectly take a look at all those who made headlines with their stylish looks at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. He reminded people that the event is about movies, not a “fashion show.” His tweet comes a day after he slammed the use of assistants who accompany female celebrities on the red carpet. In a new tweet, Vivek wrote, “You know Cannes Film Festival is for movies? I thought I should remind you in case you thought it was a fashion show.”
Responding to him, actress Meera Chopra commented, “It’s very sad, I said the same thing when I went there last year… that it has become a fashion parade. Bollywood only talks about what you wear and where you are covered by the media to an extent that it becomes stressful. Trust me it’s not the same for other countries. They haven’t gone crazy like us about fashion and public affairs!”

Meera Chopra made her Cannes red carpet debut last year. Talking about her experience, she had told Hindustan Times, “Going to the festival was actually an overwhelming feeling because I didn’t just go with some brand of liquor or just to walk the red carpet for nothing. I know there were many people who did this. But I went there to promote my film, Safed, by launching the poster. But now the whole exercise of dressing up, clicking your pictures, posting them on social media has become cumbersome and tiring. I don’t know what purpose it serves.”
“The spotlight should always be more on work. But because of this madness, does it all boil down to what kind of design and brand you wear? It’s a very shallow way of thinking,” he also said.

On Friday, The Kashmir Files director shared a photo of Aishwarya Rai’s first red carpet moment this year. He wrote, “Have you heard of a term called ‘suit slaves’. They are mostly girls (a suited man in this case). You can see them now in India with almost every celebrity. Why are we becoming so stupid and oppressive only in such an inconvenient way?’
This season, several celebrities were seen walking the red carpet at Cannes. They included Aishwarya, Sara Ali Khan, Mrunal Thakur, Manushi Chhillar, Esha Gupta, Diana Penty, Urvashi Rautela, Sapna Choudhary, Shark Tank’s Aman Gupta and Kumar Sanu’s singer daughter Shannon among others.
