September has finally arrived and summer is slowly coming to an end. In just a few weeks, Autumn will be upon us in all its fiery glory. But for now, we have just three weeks of summer and warm weather to enjoy—and we’ll enjoy it, because we know time is fleeting.
A new month also means another weekend of new streaming content, and unlike last weekend, there are quite a few big shows dropping on the myriad of streaming services we all have to watch (and subscribe to) these days.
Each week I bring you this guide after scouring the internet and stuff for all the best new and interesting shows and movies to hit our TVs over the weekend. I don’t always understand everything, so if something comes up that isn’t covered here, please contact me Twitter the Facebook.
Ok, on to all the new stuff!
One Piece (Netflix)
Netflix has done a lot of adaptations, including some pretty bad live-action renditions of popular anime like Cowboy Bebop, but One piece is doing very well with both critics and fans of the original anime. The show hit Netflix on Thursday and it looks pretty cool. I’ve never watched the anime, so I’m going in with virgin eyes and opinions as clear as snow. I hope to at least start with my kids this weekend.
Wheel of Time — Season 2 (Amazon Prime Video)
I wish I could be more excited The Wheel of Time second season, but the first was such a wild hit or miss in almost every way. The casting was perfect in parts and strange in others. The costumes and sets looked great one minute and cheap the next. The changes in the books were often puzzling and weird, and the acting and the pacing and really just about everything was all over the map. I haven’t watched any of this new season yet but from what I’ve heard it’s following the same path. To be fair, I’m not a huge fan of Robert Jordan’s books, but this made me hope that a TV adaptation could work in my favor. So far, not so much.
Choose Love (Netflix)
This is another choose your own adventure movie on Netflix. This time, you get to make choices in a rom-com, deciding whether the protagonist, Cami, stays with her current boyfriend or chooses to go down a different path, like trying to get back with “the one that got away.”
Disappointment (Netflix)
Fantasy cartoons from The Simpsons Creator Matt Groening is releasing his final season on Netflix this weekend. I’ll be honest, I tried to get into it in Season 1 because it sounded like exactly my cup of tea, but it was just . . . not very funny. Maybe it gets better? Maybe I should add it to the endless backlog to catch up, I don’t know. Hopefully it will be a satisfying conclusion for the fans.
Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary Edition (In Theaters)
I just found out about it, but Jurassic Park is returning to theaters to celebrate its 30th anniversary, which makes me feel very old. I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid and being completely blown away. I went twice and have seen it many times since then. By far the best of the Jurassic Park franchise, the original is still one of my favorite movies of all time, and I think I’ll have to go see it—in 3D—this weekend. I can still listen to the original soundtrack at will, those majestic horns, some of legendary composer John Williams’ best work.
Qui-Gonn Reacts To Ahsoka
Finally, if you haven’t had the great pleasure of watching Charlie Hopkinson’s wonderfully hilarious YouTube videos, now you can. In his latest, he mocks lovingly Ahsoka on Disney+ and does some really funny impressions of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gonn and Anakin Skywalker all watching and reacting to the episodes. Simply delightful (by far my favorite part of it Ahsoka).
Some of the ongoing shows I have covered include:
- New Star Wars projection Ahsoka which airs its third episode next Tuesday. I’ve written rather critically about Dave Filoni’s new Rosario Dawson show, which is pretty successful so far and far from the masterpiece it was Andor.
- I’m one episode behind The king of winter but that’s it only because I found the series premiere so very, very disappointing. This period drama is based on one of my favorite trilogies, The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell, but the show – at least so far – doesn’t do it justice.
- Moving on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and I enjoy it very much. I have so many shows to catch up on it’s really a problem: Only Murders in the Building, Booking Dogs, Bear, The Handmaid’s Tale And much more.
- I caught up Foreign, However, and I really enjoyed the first half of the new season. Part 2 doesn’t arrive until 2024, unfortunately, but here we go Men in kilts to watch on Starz which is very beautiful and charming and will make you want to travel, which is nice.
- I read this piece in Vanity Fair for a bunch of “perfect” TV episodes and while I haven’t seen many of them, the ones I have seen I totally agree with. One is “The Constant” by Lost, which reminds me i really need to finish watching this show with my kids. Another is “Battle Of The Blackwater” by game of thrones, which was so brilliant. For a funnier episode, “The Injury” from The office included, which is absolutely my all-time favorite from that show. Good stuff!
