“The Scissorhands”
Director Tim Burton was on a roll when he turned his attention to a fairy tale called “Edward Scissors.” The 1993 film came after the success of Burton’s “Beetlejuice” and “Batman”, and while “Edward Scissorhands” has a dark current like all of Burton’s works, it was a much sweeter and more emotional film than he’s. had done before. Johnny Depp stars as an unfinished humanoid of a well-meaning inventor who died before he could complete his vision. Edward is later discovered years later living in the inventor’s dilapidated mansion and transported to the suburbs under a door-to-door Avon saleswoman (Dianne Wiest). As soon as he arrives in the city, he fights with being “other” and creates a relationship with the woman’s daughter, played by Winona Ryder. There is a Christmas bang throughout the process and the film boasts one of Danny Elfman’s best musical scores.
“Sleepless in Seattle”
Once upon a time, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were the king and queen of romantic comedies. Their second film, “Sleepless in Seattle” of 1993, is still one of the most romantic and moving romcoms ever made. Ryan plays a Baltimore Sun reporter who is engaged to a man he does not really love who hears on the radio one night a widow (Tom Hanks) telling the story of the loss of his wife and the upbringing of his young son. What follows is her charm with this man and the attempt to find him. Nora Ephron co-wrote and directed the film, and this moving finale continues to drown us all these years later.
“The hunt for red October”
Before John Krasinski was Jack Ryan (and Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck), there was Alec Baldwin. “The Hunt for Red October” of 1990 is Jack Ryan’s first adaptation and remains one of the best. Baldwin takes on the role of CIA analyst who concludes that a rogue Soviet master (played by Sean Connery) wants to surrender to the United States while on an advanced submarine. Ryan runs against time to convince his superiors that he is right, while the Navy captain’s motives remain vague on the Soviet submarine. Connery and Baldwin are amazing in the film, which is a nail-biting thriller directed by “Die Hard” director John McTirnan.
“Jennifer’s body”
If you’re someone who likes to find hidden gems, the “Jennifer’s Body” is waiting for you to rediscover it. Written by Oscar-winning “Juno” screenwriter Diablo Cody and directed by Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation”), the film was advertised as a sexy horror film starring Megan Fox, but is actually a subversive horror comedy about the objectification of women. . Fox plays a high school student who is ritually sacrificed by a fighting rock band for fame. Fox’s character, Jennifer, is then possessed by a demon and begins to lure horny teens and then devours them. Amanda Seyfried plays Jennifer’s best friend who tries to save her before it’s too late. This is sharp and funny and has become adored since its release in 2009.
The Royal Tenenbaums
For a moment of whimsy and dry humor, you can not go wrong with the famous comedy / drama of 2001 by director Wes Anderson “The Royal Tenenbaums”. With a strong cast, the story is about a dysfunctional family whose three children were miracles as children, but are now struggling as adults. Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson and Gwyneth Paltrow impersonate the children, Gene Hackman is their grumpy and half-alien father, and Angelica Houston impersonates their tender mother. Bill Murray, Danny Glover and Owen Wilson complete the cast of what looks like an adaptation of a book that doesn’t really exist.
“Theory of everything”
For all those Oscar-winning drama lovers out there, Stephen Hawking’s 2014 biopic “Theory of Everything” is now airing on Prime Video. Eddie Redman won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Hawking, as the film describes the life of a theoretical physicist from college to the present day, with his relationship with his prospective wife (and ex-wife) Jane Hawking (played by Felicity Jones). ) serves as the backbone. The film deals extensively with Hawking’s diagnosis of ALS and his struggle to overcome his physical limitations, while still trying to push the field of physics forward. Starring Charlie Cox, Emily Watson and Simon McBurney.
