What you may be wondering, though, and why I’re happy to answer, is why The Godfather, which is often cited as one of the greatest American films that have never been produced, have never been available for streaming from the beginning. The answer to this question is both simple and complex.

As you may already know, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the original Godfather movie, and in honor of the occasion, all three films received a limited release in theaters for Dolby Cinema at AMC Cinemas in the US on February 25th. The re-release took advantage of the recent 4K transfer of the film, edited by writer-director Francis Ford Coppola, who went so far as to reconsider the divisive critique. Part III to get closer to his original vision.

The reason why the Godfather trilogy was temporarily unavailable for streaming until today was not only due to the 50th anniversary theatrical performance, but also to not commercially undermine the release of the Godfather 4K restorations, which was released on March 22. Now that The Celebration of 50 is over, you can finally come back to enjoy these movies from the comfort of your own home via streaming.
