“This was my project about the pandemic. I was stuck alone trying to make sense of this huge life,” he explained. “I was trying to make sense of it, so everyone closest to me — my kids, my wife — never heard me shut up about it. And then I realized zooming in with my daughter that…in every relationship There isn’t that one person and one person. There’s this shared space that the two people are together.”
That conversation and follow-up helped guide Hawke’s six-part documentary, which was produced by CNN Films and is now streaming on HBO Max (which, like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery).
Directed by Hawke and narrated by George Clooney, Laura Linney and others.
“Well, don’t worry, it’s going to be a long act,” he said, clarifying his comments. “I highly recommend you get your coffee. I’m not going anywhere.”
