Images of Luther offer a first look at the upcoming film

Idris Elba may be done playing James Bond, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be giving fans another great character as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther returns to the screen next year. With the film – the first, after five series – four months into release, first look images have been revealed.

In an article published in EmpireIdris Elba teased a few details about the locations and scope of the upcoming Luther movie theater. “We’re really peeling back the onion here because we had the time and scale to do this… It also delivers [series creator and writer] Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, with Luther-land to play with, in terms of where Luther can go, how he goes, what the landscape is.’

Elba previously said a Luther movie would have “More murders, more Volvos, a more frowning Luther… basically we just want to try to take it to a much larger audience and scale, and maybe even internationally.” There’s no word on how many more Volvos there will be, but Idris Elba is making good on the international aspect, as seen in the image below:

Elba built on this, saying, “We’re waking up from the gritty streets of London, taking it a bit outside of it… And that’s great. We feel like we are now entering a different life of his Luther experience.”

Besides Idris Elba, the cast also features Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis–“Erivo will play a detective who also happens to be Luther’s nemesis, while Serkis will play the film’s criminal villain.” The film will be directed by Jamie Payne, who directed all four episodes of series five.

Series one of Luther aired in 2010 while the most recent fifth series concluded in 2019. View for Luther was at an all-time high for that season, showing that her fan base was as strong as ever.

Luther will be released on March 23, 2023.
