A new Teen Wolf movie and a new series from one of the producers behind the series, the Wolf Pack, are both on the way. Don’t be confused though, these two projects are, surprisingly, unrelated.
“I know everyone gets confused about it, but I always say, ‘Nobody thinks Twilight is in the same universe as Interview With The Vampire,'” says Jeff Davis. SFX Magazine in the new issue, with Teen Wolf on the cover. “There can be two werewolf shows that exist in separate spaces. It’s funny because one of the things we did was consciously try to do things differently with the Wolf Pack.
“I said, ‘I don’t want to do the same show. I want to do something more grown up, a bit extreme in places. Not necessarily darker, but a little bit more sophisticated thematically.” Teen Wolf was very comic. It had a real sense of humor… not that the Wolf Pack doesn’t have a sense of humor, but it’s not as comical as Teen Wolf.”
The Wolf Pack is set to star pop culture icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, something of a coup for the series. The Buffy The Vampire Slayer actress hasn’t ventured into supernatural territory – let alone as regular live-action TV – in quite some time. So even Davis was surprised when she agreed to come on board.
“The conversations were like, ‘Sarah Michelle Gellar?’ We’re never going to get Sarah Michelle Gellar,” he recalled. “She hasn’t done a show like this in years. There’s no way she’s going to jump back into it knowing the legacy of Buffy and that she was the star of one of the greatest shows ever .” Then we met and clicked. She really liked the script. I’m just as surprised as anyone else that he said yes.”
Ever since Teen Wolf ended its six-season run in 2017, fans of the show have been clamoring for a reboot, a revival, a miniseries… honestly, anything. That wait will finally end in January when Paramount Plus airs Teen Wolf: The Movie. Teen Wolf creator Davis, who is also a producer and screenwriter on the film, calls the effort “a colossal undertaking. The first cut was three hours. Part of that is that you have so many characters to serve. At the end of writing the film , I kind of realized, “Oh my God. This is basically the all-in-one season seven movie.” We packed a lot into this movie. It was trying to give fans big moments, teary moments, and funny moments while giving them flashbacks to what the show was, but also some new things like Vince Mattis, who plays Eli, Derek Hale’s son.”
The Wolf Pack and Teen Wolf: The Movie are both on Paramount Plus from January 27th. For more on both, check it out latest issue of SFX Magazine (opens in new tab), available December 28th! For even more from SFX, subscribe to newslettersending all the latest exclusives straight to your inbox.
