Joel McHale has confirmed that Community will begin filming in June, with most of the original cast returning for the sequel.
During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, McHale gave fans an exciting update on the highly anticipated Community film. The comedian dropped by the show to discuss his new series Animal Control, but the conversation briefly turned to the topic of the fan-favorite Greendale team and when they’ll be reuniting.
“We’re doing the Community movie in June, so … Thanks for remembering,” he joked after Kimmel asked him about the project.
McHale also reiterated that Ken Jeong would reprise his role alongside original stars Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rush. Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover are yet to be confirmed as part of the cast – and Chevy Chase is highly unlikely to return after a very public falling out over the show.
The long-awaited movie sequel was officially announced in September after years of campaigning by fans of the original series who were desperate to see the “six seasons and a movie” prophecy come true. Community creator Dan Harmon kicked things off in August when he finally pitched an idea for a follow-up film.
Harmon is attached to the project as an executive producer along with McHale, Andrew Guest, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster. Harmon also wrote the script for the upcoming film, which is believed to be a bit of a tearjerker as McHale warned fans that he “cried like a baby” after reading the first panel.
Along with the film, Peacock has also secured non-competition rights to show Season 6 of Community , giving prospective viewers a chance to re-enter the meta-riffic sitcom before the film debuts.
