While James Cameron he did not direct a film between Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Waterproduced and co-wrote a few titles, including the latest Finisher film, Dark fate. Despite Cameron’s involvement, as well as roles for franchise stalwarts Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, the film was not a huge success. Cameron was recently rendered to make “your grandfather’s killer movie” and to be “short-sighted” about what they had created and what today’s moviegoer would think of cinema.
But Finisher Movies have failed in the past and they just keep on coming. (It’s six now Finisher movies, if you’ve lost count.) And Cameron now says the franchise, like Skynet, could be on the rise again. In a recent appearance on SmartLess podcast (via The playlist), Cameron revealed that yet another Finisher is “under discussion”.
Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
The Avatar movies are about the environment. I’m not into AI… If I were to do another Terminator movie and maybe try to relaunch that franchise, which is under discussion, but nothing has been decided. I’d do it much more for the AI side than the evil robots gone mad.
As Cameron’s comments suggest, he holds a lot of affection for The Terminator series. (Also should, wouldn’t you would you love it if you had created one of the most beloved sci-fi movies in history?) The real problem with the franchise, aside from its aging stars, is the fact that the horrific future the heroes are trying to stop is supposed to have happened decades ago. The sequels tried to overcome this in a few different ways. Sometimes the characters claim that while the revelation has been delayed, it is still coming. In case that Terminator: Salvation, they actually made a post-apocalyptic movie, with less than stellar results. It’s a bit like later Friday 13th film; Sure, it might be fun to watch Jason Voorhees run around cutting people up, but it’s you afraid from him from Jason X? Not really. The stakes have been lowered somewhat.
Cameron has the right idea, at least, by making a new movie about artificial intelligence rather than killer robots. Same old Finisher it just won’t work anymore. Meanwhile, Cameron’s new movie Avatar: The Way of Water is playing in cinemas. He still has three of these that he wants to build, so who knows when he’ll find the time to build one Finisher above that.
