Are dad jokes making a comeback? Netflix users seem to think so, with Bill Burr’s latest comedy entering the streaming platform’s top 10 chart.
Even though it just arrived on the streaming platform (from October 20, 2023), Old Dads went straight to the top of Netflix’s top 10 movies list.
According to the film’s synopsis, “When a middle-aged father and his two best friends sell their company to a millennial, they soon find themselves out of step and behind the times as they struggle to navigate a changing world of culture, career and paternity.”

However, according to Rotten Tomatoes, Bill Burr’s comedy isn’t as big a hit as Netflix currently thinks it is.
Bill Burr’s comedy Old Dads charts in Netflix’s top 10
As of October 23, 2023, Bill Burr’s new comedy Old Dads is currently at the top of Netflix’s top 10 movies list.
While Netflix users may love Food Watch, Rotten tomatoes users aren’t so sure. The film currently ranks on Tomatometer at 18%, with an overall audience rating of 90%.
Todd McCarthy at Deadline is described the film as “a dull and disgustingly vulgar comedy that, since it can’t claim any other major accolades, might as well have been written expressly to break the all-time record for use of the f-word in a major studio film.”

David Ehrlich at IndieWire agreed: “The whole ‘offends you, yes?’ The routine only works if someone commits to it, and Burr is too tender at heart to go all the way. He doesn’t want to piss people off, he just wants to voice his grievances about progressive culture.”

Mark Kennedy at Associated Press concluded the “rotten” reviews with “a meandering, dispassionate attack on PC culture that would have looked perfect in the 1990s alongside Dinesh D’Souza’s Illiberal Education and Pat Buchanan’s rants.” It’s so dated it even mentions Halliburton.”

However, audience reviews of Bill Burr’s comedy tell an entirely different story.
Stravri D describes Old Dads on Rotten tomatoes as “amazing movie! As usual, the “critics” here are so out of touch with reality… I mean, just look at the numbers! Don’t trust the so-called ‘critics’, just see it!” while Jimmah 3 added “Bill Burr is my favorite comedian of all time, so I may be a little biased… but I really enjoyed this movie.”
“It’s funny and says everything that needs to be said in today’s strange world. “Reviewers’ negative reviews just prove how bland and pompous they are,” agreed Matthew R.
