Dune 2 Director Denis Villeneuve has waded into an increasingly controversial film debate ahead of the release of his highly anticipated film.
The director, whose credits include; Arrival and Blade Runner 2049is busy promoting his new film which is receiving critical acclaim including The independentby Clarisse Loughrey, who awarded the film five stars out of five.
During a new interview, he questioned how long the Dune sequel, which stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, will finally be released in March after being delayed by the Hollywood strikes in 2023.
Over the last 10 years, movies have been getting bigger and bigger, with many regularly questioning on social media whether these increased dimensions are necessary.
Recent films that have found themselves at the center of such discussions include those by Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer and Martin Scorsese Killers of the Flower Moonlasting three hours and three hours, 30 minutes, respectively.
One person who thinks this argument is silly is Villeneuve, whose Dune 2 has a running time of two hours, 46 minutes.
When asked about the running time in a new interview, Villeneuve said that the film's distributor, Warner Bros. Pictures, did not tell him to cut the film, saying “it was almost the opposite.”

“That was the only way I was going to succeed,” he said, adding, “Also, think Oppenheimer. It's a three-hour, R-rated movie about mostly talking nuclear physics. But the audience was young – this was the movie of the year by far for my kids.”
Villeneuve argued that while many people may be disappointed in longer screenings, young people today really want movies to be longer.
He said: “There is a trend. The youth love to watch big movies because if they pay they want to see something meaningful. They crave meaningful content.”
