MANILA – A teaser of Piolo Pascual’s upcoming horror film “Mallari” has been released.
The film’s producers described “Mallari” as a narrative that combines elements of fiction and reality, drawing inspiration from the real events surrounding Fr. Juan Severino Malari.
Mallari is an 1800s parish priest who killed 57 people before being caught, becoming the Philippines’ first and only recorded serial killer, predating Jack the Ripper by more than 60 years.
Shot in various historical locations in the Philippines, including a village purpose-built for the film, this project was painstakingly planned over nearly four years, weaving three timelines that combine audiences’ love of retro horror with the direct relevance of today’s horrors.
The film has been submitted for consideration at the Metro Manila Film Festival this year.
An announcement is expected next week about the four final films that will make the cut.
