Jackie Chan will return to Hong Kong action cinema with the new Detective Story 2

by Stewart Cole

Hong Kong’s biggest star makes a big return to the hit action/comedy series that made his first name. Decades after appearing in the “Police Story” films and subsequent sequels, spin-offs and reboots (the latest of which arrived in 2013, bringing the franchise’s tally to seven films in total), Jackie Chan and Nicholas Tse are back for “New Detective Story 2.” Chan has routinely cited the original films as the best and most exciting action scenes he’s ever performed on camera in his decades of acting, so his announcement that he’ll be back for another sequel certainly speaks volumes.

Aside from Tse’s involvement both in front of and behind the camera as director, there has been no word on what other actors may fill out the cast. Either way, the new film will have quite an uphill climb. The original films starred many living legends such as Maggie Cheung in the original trilogy, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh in the 1992 sequel/spin-off “Supercop” and many more. Chan, now 68, will certainly have his work cut out for him to return to a rebooted franchise nearly two decades after its launch. However, it would be incredibly foolish to count out the martial arts expert after he recently starred in films like 2020’s ‘Vanguard’ and 2017’s Martin Campbell-directed ‘The Foreigner’.

There’s no word yet on a specific release date for “New Police Story 2,” but more updates are sure to come.
