The only real sign of success in Hollywood is money, and for that matter Jurassic World Dominion was a huge success. However, while the general consensus as to its quality was, say, much less successfulobviously some of the choices made led to this they were made in the service of the future of the franchise.
No, that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it’s coming from a person who will know. Colin Trevorrow, the film’s co-writer and director, explained in an interview with Empire that the inscrutable decision not to make the film’s basic story about dinosaurs was his way of expanding the franchise so that other filmmakers could do more Jurassic movies in the future.
“The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs,” Trevorrow said in a factual statement. “This is a story about characters in a world where they coexist with dinosaurs. In order for the franchise to go forward – being inherently un-franchise, there probably would have to be only one Jurassic Park— but if we do, how do I allow them to tell stories in a world where there are dinosaurs, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?”
This quote is like the Zapruder film with movie interview clips, so let’s break it down. First of all, Trevorrow basically admits that every Jurassic The movie after the original was just a remake of the original in a way, and that maybe these movies shouldn’t exist. Having read the whole series before watching SovereigntyI don’t think he’s entirely right—some of the films try things in different, fun ways—but it’s an interesting point.
Then when Trevorrow says, “This is a story about characters in a world where they coexist with dinosaurs,” he’s basically saying that the movie isn’t about dinosaurs. Which again is accurate. The movie is about grasshoppers. And the biggest implication here, that the Jurassic The franchise it needs to evolve is also good. It was a bad idea to choose to do it in a movie that follows five dinosaur movies. It evolved into the seventh film. Finish this streak strong. Jurassic World Dominion it doesn’t do that.
But apparently, there’s a reason for that too. In the same interview, Trevorrow says he never saw his film as his “conclusion Jurassic saga” which was sold as. In fact, he didn’t know until it was already over. “I never knew this was the end of the franchise until I saw the marketing,” Trevorrow said. “These guys are brilliant at what they do, but to me I think it would be more clear if they said ‘The End of an Era’, as opposed to all from this. Because regardless of the cynical approach – of course they will want to make more money, that’s what Jurassic World it was about — a new dinosaur fan is born every day. Kids deserve these movies, and young filmmakers grow up on these stories—sort of Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz and worlds to which we keep returning.’
But then why? join the new characters with the original characters? Plus, you’re the third film in a trilogy and the sixth in a franchise. We’re not sure we think Trevorrow didn’t know his film was a climactic one, but the recap remains. The Jurassic the franchise is likely to continue no matter what (probably with new characters like Kayla Watts by DeWanda Wise and Ramsay Cole by Mamoudou Athie, according to Trevorrow), and maybe this movie walked so they could fly. But we’ll believe it when we see it.
