Over the years, Karan Johar has been vocal about how film budgets are split between multiple parties. The director and producer appeared on the Masters’ Union podcast, discussing how the budget is shared between actors, producers, directors and theater owners.

Karan Johar Says 50 Percent Of Profits Are Taken By ‘Delirious’ Actors: ‘It’s Harder To Negotiate With Them Than Distributors’

Karan Johar said, “Unfortunately, the pie is with the film stars, which should not be the case. It is not that every movie star can open a movie at any given time. But you pay them top dollar. If he’s a big director, then the gap is: 50 for the star and 30 for the director, a little more for the writer and the producer is the last one to make the money.”

Johar also said that today’s stars will not enjoy the same kind of stardom enjoyed by stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan among others. He said, “Any of our new generation film stars cannot have the aura and magic of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Mr Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn and Hrithik Roshan. they were the last of the Mohicans.” He continued, “See fame and superstardom are two different things. You can be a YouTuber and become famous. But are you a superstar? Will people stop and stand in a line just because of you? That doesn’t happen anymore.”

Elaborating on the distribution of earnings, Karan revealed, “In superstar finances, 60-70% goes to the star. In non-superstar finances, maybe 20, 30 and then it’s divided by… if the director is big, then the writer, then the technicians and then it’s divided equally after that.”

“It’s harder to negotiate with actors than with distributors. Because that’s where we fight illusions. Delusion is a disease for which there is no vaccine. I can’t tell the world the truth that you opened this, this, this in the last four movies, now why are you asking me this? You ask me what you opened to. You open to 5 crores, I should give you Rs. 5 crores,” Karan added.

He added about the delusional part saying, “You don’t want to hurt or upset anybody because at the end of the day, they’re stars, they come with fragile egos, they come with their management that sometimes the biggest stars. I have my own management agency and I keep telling them, “Please, you have to work for the producer and you don’t have to work for the actor.” He’s not an unrealistic producer, he’s someone who gives you data and analysis, at least listen to him.”

Meanwhile, Karan Johar’s next film Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani will hit theaters in April this year. Starring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan.
