Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill at their “Jurassic” Reunion

by Stewart Cole

GOLDBLUM Well, I did not know that you felt so strongly for me!

NEILL I found it a bit discouraging, but the great thing about Jeff is that it’s also a lovable grief. And so I fell in love with both of them from day one.

How did your lives change when “Jurassic Park” became the highest grossing movie ever made?

GOLDBLUM I do not focus on everyone’s business – I still consider myself a humble student of the creative endeavor – but I remember the opening weekend was exciting. Sometimes I do great things that I think are obvious, and I will tell you, a week will pass, and it is as if it never happened. I do not get a single call. This happens often, you will be surprised.

NEILL One day, Bruce Dern [Laura’s father] came around my house to fall [her] he left, and took me aside and hit me on the shoulder. He said, “My son, do you know what? “You have a ticket to eat here.” Now, maybe that’s right. I have not stopped working since then.

DERN You hope that if such a thing happens, your Richter scale will not shift to how you measure what you want to do. I remember Jeff reading a script and saying, “This is what you have to do after Jurassic Park,” and it was “Citizen Ruth.” I could have come back and done it, like the girl in the action movie, but it takes an amazing artist to say, ‘Don’t make it obvious. Do what you love and you are bold “.

GOLDBLUM Over the decades, it has changed my life significantly. I’m a different person than I would ever be because I worked on the first film and with these guys in particular – I’m very, very empowered. And all the people I meet jokes and have been excited, excited, excited, entertained and excited about all the “Jurassic” things – that’s a big deal.
